"Martin Niemöller (1892–1984), a Lutheran pastor in Germany, was imprisoned between 1938 and 1945 for his opposition to the Nazi regime. On one occasion, when interrogated by Hitler himself, Niemöller responded, “You can imprison me and you can torture me and you can kill me, but . . . one day you will give an account to one who is the King of kings and the Lord of lords.” Justice may not always be done in this life. But there will be a judgment, and justice will be done."

ii. Last, they came for Martin Niemöller, because he was a far-right pastor who voted for No More Voting in 1933; & when, in 1946, he said, “First, they came for the Socialists,” it fell on deaf ears, for he was preaching to the choir, & the leopards had already eaten all their faces.
prayer for the civil reunion of our alternate dimensions
after Ursula K. Le Guin i. some of you are so afraid of turning into monsters you make up an Abyss to walk away from. Look, Omelas has other children! I can’t say a narrative uplifts, but we sure as Hell can choose one that will doom us if we wait long enough. I promise: this parallel is not a place of reason; think carefully about a human future one might hope for & believe in.

Today in Christian History
Tumblr media
Today is Monday, March 6th, the 65th day of 2023. There are 300 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
1830: The New York Evangelist is founded with the assistance of Charles G. Finney for the express purpose of representing revival interests and will soon command a large circulation.
1883: Death in Oslo of Norwegian editor and hymnwriter, Elevine Heede. Altogether she had written or translated more than two hundred hymns.
1901: Amy Carmichael, serving as a missionary in India, shelters her first temple runaway, a young girl dedicated to the Hindu gods and forced into prostitution to earn money for the priests.
1916: Russians slaughter the Turkish 3rd Army, giving no quarter to the men held responsible for the recent massacre of Armenian Christians.
1919: Death in Peoria, Illinois, of hymnwriter Julia Harriette Johnston who had directed a Presbyterian Sunday school for forty years and written a book of missionary lives. Her best-known hymn was the popular “Grace Greater than Our Sin.”
1933: Death in Massachusetts of Christian educator and hymnwriter Amos R. Wells, editor of Peloubet’s Notes for the International Sunday School Lessons and editorial secretary for the United Society of Christian Endeavor.
1984: Death of Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoller, a founder of Germany’s Confessing Church and an opponent of the Nazis, who imprisoned him for many years.
2015: Opening day of The Oromo Theologians’ Forum is held in Oslo, Norway, and seeks ways for displaced Ethiopians to effectively share the gospel in Europe.

🗣️ Pay very close attention!
Tumblr media
Please forget, for a moment, that many people live in the intersection of simultaneously being Black + LGBTQ + refugee + Asian. Instead, I am asking you to look at how the Republican culture wars are pitting one identity against the other.
DeSantis has banned any mention of Gay and Trans people, Black Lives Matter, George Floyd, Critical Race Theory, and much more… but now he is mandating Asian American history.
Florida and other Republican controlled legislators around the country are whitewashing and erasing Black history from school history textbooks, while also making Asian history a requirement. ⁉️
Please be just a little bit curious.
You must ask yourself, why?
WHY would an abjectly racist politician ban one culture’s history, but require another’s?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DeSantis is playing Asian people, the “model minority,” against—in his eyes—all of the “less desirable” minorities: Black people, Lgbtq+ people, etc. etc. etc. It’s a classic divide and conquer strategy.
Please see his ploy for what it is. We are all stronger together. Republicans know this. It’s why they’re working so hard to drive wedges between us.
Don’t fall for the okie doke.

"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out. Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out. Because I was not a trade unionist. First they came for the trans people...
So I've seen this circling in both TERF circles and in trans circles...
"Stop saying this is a genocide against trans people, that's disrespectful to Jewish people!"
First, it is perfectly accurate to call something a genocide when politicians are openly saying at rallies "transgenderism must be eliminated". That is calling for genocide!!
Second, there is more than one way to commit genocide; it doesn't just mean "forcing them to wear symbols, rounding them up and murdering them in camps". Genocide includes inflicting great harm to a group of people with the intent of erasing them from existence. Many different groups of people have had genocide committed against them, including the indigenous people of the Americas.
Denying trans people the right to transition, making it illegal to talk about trans people in school, forcibly detransitioning trans people, forcing them to live in the closet, forcing them to be sterilized in order to transition, labeling "living with a trans person" as child abuse so you can take away their children, and making it illegal to openly identify as trans, are all acts of genocide. They are all designed to destroy trans people.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade-unionist, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade-unionist Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the me and there was no one left to speak for me. ~Reverand Martin Niemoller, Pastor

Fascism Rising
Years ago I participated in a discussion group at Facebook that engaged many systems thinkers and big names in technology. I was invited by a quite brilliant programmer and musician. I was over my head.
I did write a post complaining of Red Baiting in a discussion thread. In response a very big wheel, on the administrative side, of a prestigious institute devoted to the study of systems and complexity wrote (this is from memory, so not verbatim, but very close to it):
What's wrong with Red-baiting? It's good to call them out and trap them so they can be exterminated for the vermin they are.
Discouragingly the responses to his post were about me and how I was Marxian, if not a Marxist. I did call out the eliminationist rhetoric of the celebrity administrator. He deleted his posts but the disparaging remarks about me remained.
Donald Trump is running for president on the promise to eliminate “the radicalized thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.”
I'm a very commonplace white guy, but it's clear to me that I can be the object of the eliminationist rhetoric along with a wide collection of people I'd probably consider friends. . I cannot claim not to notice as Pastor Martin Niemoller did about the German fascists: "First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out…" I have little reach, which is not to say there is no use in my speaking out. But Niemoller's warning is resonant because so many prominent leaders are either embracing fascism or apparently oblivious to its rise.
Running errands today I past "America First" yard signs and cars with a Trump-head decals on the backseat windows: "riding with Trump." Maybe it's the election season heating up, but all the signs may be a defiant reation to Trump's recent criminal convictions. I have yet to see anyone wearing a golden diaper, "real men wear diapers" but their very existence is disturbing. As gross as the diapers are, the promulgation of vigilante violence against civil servants, teachers, police, judges, witnesses called to testify in trials, etc, and their family members, ought to raise alarms.

This is the future you are building
Once a fargeted minority is eliminated, authoritarians aren't gonna stop. They are just gon a keep blaming all thw problems on another minority, and another and another, and another, ...
While your rights and hard fought freedoms will silently be stripped away
And when you funally wake the fuck up!
There will be no one
To speak out in your name
